Japan's galv imports in August fall as Tokyo begins AD probe

Preliminary data from Japan's finance ministry show that during August, the country's imports of galvanized sheet products, including hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) and electrogalvanized, plunged by 14% from July to 94,313 tonnes, though the total was still nearly 7% higher on year. Japanese industry watchers suggest that behind the on-month tumble was the government's decision to launch an anti-dumping (AD) investigation into HDG imports from China and South Korea the two largest suppliers but this is unclear.

The Japanese Customs statistics show that within the total, South Korea supplied 69,652 tonnes, lower by 12% on month but higher by 15% on year, while those from China actually rose by 3.7% from July but were lower by 6% from August last year at 19,693 tonnes. The statistics
