CANSI: China's shipbuilders hold global lead during Jan-Sept

China’s shipbuilding firms continued to lead the industry globally in the first three quarters of 2025, with the Chinese builders dominating the three key performance indicators of vessels completed, new orders received, and order backlog, accounting for 53.8%, 67.3%, and 65.2% of global totals respectively, according to the latest data released by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI).

Between January and September, the Chinese builders completed vessels equivalent to 38.53 million deadweight tons (DWT), up 6% on year. Of this, more than 90% were for foreign shipping lines and owners, CANSI noted. During the same period, new orders totalled 66.60 million DWT, slumping by 23.5% from the same period last year,
