According to industry sources on November 4, NextStar Energy, the joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, announced it will partially convert the automotive battery production lines at its Windsor plant in Canada to ESS battery lines within the year and begin mass production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
The joint venture project was officially announced in March 2022, with a planned investment exceeding $4.1 billion. Originally scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2024, the facility targets an annual production capacity of over 45 GWh.
During the Q3 earnings call on October 30, LG Energy Solution had hinted that partial production lines at its JV battery plants with automakers could be converted for ESS applications, including the facility established with Stellantis.
Through this production adjustment, LG Energy Solution will further expand its supply capacity for the rapidly growing North American ESS market.
