On August 20, Tengyuan Cobalt announced that it plans to invest in and construct the 160,000-tonne Sulfur-Burning Sulfuric Acid Plant with 5,000-tonne Sulfur Dioxide Production and 5.3 MW Steam Turbine Power Generation Project within the plant site of Hechuang New Energy Mining Co., Ltd. in Kolwezi, Lualaba Province, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The project involves an investment of USD 18 million and has a construction cycle of approximately 13 months, of which the sulfuric acid unit is scheduled to be commissioned in 11 months and the power generation unit in 13 months. Sulfuric acid production is expected to begin in August 2027, and power generation in October 2027.
Upon completion, the project will enable the company to achieve partial or full self-supply of key auxiliary materials such as sulfuric acid and sulfur dioxide, thereby significantly reducing procurement costs and transportation expenses. At the same time, waste-heat recovery for power generation will improve the electricity self-sufficiency rate and reduce reliance on diesel-fired power generation.
