On October 8, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto traveled to Central Halmahera, North Maluku, to launch downstreaming projects worth a total of US$10.2 billion (about Rp180 trillion) at PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP). He was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Sugiono, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, and Minister of Housing and Residential Areas Maruarar Sirait.
The projects cover 11 downstreaming initiatives, including the commercialization of 4 industrial projects and the commencement of construction of 7 new industrial projects. The event also featured the inauguration of an electric vehicle battery project and the first export shipment of processed mineral products.
The first export products include mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP), a nickel processing product; nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) and lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) battery materials from PT REPT Batero Indonesia; electrolytic aluminium from PT Pioneer Aluminium Industries; and heavy equipment components based on new and renewable energy from PT XCMG Indonesia Manufacturing.
Projects that held groundbreaking ceremonies include PT Guang Ching Nickel Cobalt, PT Inno Prima Material, PT Tinci Materials Indonesia, PT Weda Bay Aluminium, PT Bintang Karya Aluminium, and PT Foton Guangqing Motor Indonesia.
IWIP covers an area of about 3,000 hectares and is equipped with industrial support facilities including power plants and ports. In addition to nickel processing for the stainless steel industry, the park is continuously expanding into the electric vehicle battery supply chain. Smelters in the park produce NPI, nickel matte, MHP, electrolytic nickel, and nickel sulfate. IWIP is listed as a National Priority Project and a National Vital Object, and is jointly owned by Tsingshan Holding Group (40%), Huayou Holding Group (30%), and Zhenshi Holding Group Co., Ltd (30%).
