Thailand's coal imports slump 31% on year in September

Thailand's coal imports fell 30.6% on year to 940,086 tonnes in September, the lowest monthly total in at least four years and 61.1% below August, Thai Customs data show. The country's rush to purchase in August turned out to be a stock-build rather than a revival in coal burn, Mysteel Global suggests.

The import reversal related almost entirely to bituminous coal, arrivals of which fell 87.2% from August to 165,150 tonnes and 68.8% below September 2025, while sub-bituminous coal – the grade burned at most Thai power stations – slipped 30.8% to 772,723 tonnes and by 6.4% on year. No lignite
