Japan's Sept coal imports drop 9.2% MoM as power demand eases

Japan imported 13.49 million tonnes of coal in September, down 9.2% from August and 1% from a year earlier, according to trade data released by Japan's Ministry of Finance. Australia remained Japan's largest coal supplier, followed by Indonesia.

Thermal coal imports totaled 8.85 million tonnes in September, accounting for 66% of Japan's total coal imports and down 2.7% on month. The decline partly reflected a seasonal easing of electricity demand after the summer peak. In September, Japan's electricity demand fell 13.9% on month to 72.5 terawatt hours (TWh),
