Guangxi Aluminum Update: Primary Aluminum Capacity Ceiling, Billet Supply, and Weak Rod Fees

Aluminum Production
Guangxi primary aluminum is capped by capacity limits, secondary aluminum remains feedstock-constrained, and new aluminum rod capacity is pressuring processing fees. Here's what China aluminum buyers should watch in 2026 Q4.

Guangxi's aluminum market is sending a clear signal to China's metal industry: primary aluminum supply is stable but has little room to grow, while downstream rod capacity is expanding fast enough to keep processing fees under pressure.

According to Mysteel data, Guangxi primary aluminum operations remain stable under China's capacity ceiling. Compliant capacity in the region has largely been fully released, and overall output elasticity has narrowed significantly. In practical terms, there is very limited room for a major production increase.

Secondary aluminum is not filling the gap. Most recycled aluminum projects in Guangxi are running at low utilization rates because of feedstock bottlenecks. As scrap aluminum's substitution threat weakens, primary aluminum is becoming more important as a base supply source for local aluminum processing.

In the billet market, maintenance-related cuts and new trial production are happening at the same time. Total aluminum billet supply in Guangxi has basically returned to normal pre-holiday levels. As new capacity gradually ramps up, additional volumes should appear steadily.

The bigger pressure point is aluminum rod. Guangxi's aluminum rod processing fees are currently in the mid-to-low range nationally - only slightly above Inner Mongolia and at a clear discount to major consumption regions such as Shandong and Henan. The core reason is rapid capacity growth: Guangxi added 220,000 metric tons of aluminum rod capacity in just two years, a cumulative increase of 75.8%. That concentrated release has intensified local competition and weakened fees.

Looking into Q4, local government efforts to stabilize industrial output and support GDP growth are being passed down the supply chain. Some primary processing companies report that authorities are encouraging compliant production expansion and capacity release. That should keep Guangxi's local conversion rate of primary aluminum high.
