WEEKLY: China's thermal coal edges higher despite typhoon-hit demand

China's thermal coal market extended its gains through the week of August 10-4, albeit at a slower pace, as tightening supply outweighed rain-related demand destruction from typhoon Dolphin, which drenched much of the country and curbed daily coal consumption.

On August 13, Mysteel assessed the benchmark 5,500 kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at Yuan 861/tonne ($126.8/t) FOB northern ports with VAT, up Yuan 16/t from a week earlier. The 5,000 kcal/kg and 4,500 kcal/kg NAR grades rose to Yuan 771/t and Yuan 685/t, up Yuan 16/t and Yuan 18/t,
