Germany's Oct crude steel output grows nearly 15% YoY

The October output also rose by 7.7% from September but the volume remained "at a very low level," the association noted.

Breakdown by steelmaking method shows that crude steel production from the basic-oxygen-furnace (BOF) process reached 2.27 million tonnes last month, up 14.1% month-on-month and 13.1% year-on-year, respectively. Meanwhile, that from the electric-arc-furnace (EAF) route contributed 947,000 tonnes, logging a 4.9% decline from September but an 18.6% increase compared to October 2023.

Last month, the country's pig iron production climbed 9% year-on-year to 2.03 million tonnes, and output of hot-rolled steel rose 7.1% to 2.77 million tonnes.

For the first 10 months of this year, Germany's total crude steel output amounted to 31.581 million tonnes, 5% higher than that for the same period last year, according to the report. 

Notably, EAF-based production surged by 11.1% year-on-year, reaching 9.325 million tonnes in January-October. This underscores Germany's ongoing shift toward steel decarbonization, as the country remains Europe's largest steel producer, with a total of 35.4 million tonnes of crude steel output recorded in 2023.

WV Stahl, headquartered in Berlin, continues to advocate for a climate-neutral steel industry, aiming to achieve this goal by 2045. The association is committed to policies that support sustainable steel production, which would reduce one-third of Germany's industrial greenhouse gas emissions, the release said.
