FLASH: Ukraine's Jan-May steel output down 2.5% YoY

Ukraine's crude steel production during January-May this year totalled 3.06 million tonnes, lower by 2.5% compared with the same period last year, according to the latest statistics published by the Ukrainian steel association Ukrmetallurgprom.

During the same period, the country's output of finished steel products also dropped by 2.4% on year to 2.5 million tonnes, the data showed.

However, Ukraine's pig iron production during this year's first five months added up to 3.01 million tonnes, higher by a marked 5.9% on year, according to the data, although in May alone the output fell by 2.3% on month and dropped 1.2% on year to some 645,000 tonnes.

Ukraine continues to play a key role in global pig iron ore trade, with the US being its major export destination, Mysteel Global noted. The Ukrainian customs statistics showed that the country exported a total of 1.29 million tonnes of pig iron ore in 2024.
