Indonesia's major nickel processing hub, the Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), has pledged to enhance environmental compliance and adopt more sustainable practices following a reminder from Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. Minister Nurofiq recently disclosed that industrial activities and factory construction are occurring across 1,800 hectares of land beyond the zone approved in IMIP's Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) documentation.
Located in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, IMIP stated it will strengthen coordination and oversight of tenant operations in line with the ministry's guidance. According to IMIP representative Dedy, the park occupies 2,000 hectares and has held AMDAL permits since 2020. Development expanded amid growing industrial value and investment potential.
Dedy confirmed IMIP applied in 2023 to extend AMDAL coverage to an additional 1,800 hectares but has yet to receive ministry approval. Despite the setback, he emphasized IMIP's commitment to deploying advanced emission-reduction technologies at its nickel smelters. The company operates automated and manual Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), with verified results reported to authorities through accredited laboratories.
