IAI: Global alumina output hits 6-month high in July

On a per-day basis, worldwide output averaged 417,806 tonnes, representing an on-month uptick of 0.7%, Mysteel Global calculated based on the IAI data.

By grade, metallurgical-grade alumina accounted for 93.7% or 12.13 million tonnes of the world's total, while chemical-grade output stood at 819,000 tonnes, the data showed.

China remained the world's top alumina producer for the seventh month this year, with its total output during July estimated at 7.75 million tonnes, or 59.8% of the global total. The volume marked a 3.3% rise from the previous month and a 5.6% increase from the same month last year.

The IAI's figure for China was notably higher than the data released by the country's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which reported the July output at 7.57 million tonnes, up by 2.4% from June and by 4.6% from a year earlier. The NBS data for July was 185,000 tonnes lower than the IAI's estimate, Mysteel Global noted.

Elsewhere, Oceania ranked as the world's second-largest alumina refiner, producing 1.48 million tonnes in July, up by 2.3% on year. Africa and Asia (excluding China) followed with a combined volume of 1.26 million tonnes, higher by 4.5% from a year ago.

For the first seven months of 2025, global alumina output totalled 87.66 million tonnes, a 4% growth compared with the January-July period in 2024, according to the IAI data.
