Alcoa invests $60 mln in US aluminum smelter, signs 10-year energy pact
This pact of 10 years would provide the Massena Operations with almost 240 megawatts of renewable energy. It would be effective from April 1, 2026, comprising a possibility of extending the pact for almost two more additional five years. Alcoa Corporation is a leading organisation in the manufacturing of bauxite, alumina and aluminum products with various sustainable methods.
Alcoa President and CEO William F. Oplinger stated, "We are proud to make aluminum in New York and the United States. Long-term, competitively priced energy enables Alcoa to proceed with this important investment that will help us meet the demands of today while planning for tomorrow. We are extremely pleased to have worked with NYPA and ESD to achieve this outcome for our Massena Operations, which will continue to bring economic benefits to the region and sustain American manufacturing."
The Massena Operations has started its operation in the year 1902 and is the world's longest continuously operating aluminum smelter. It has an annual capacity of 130,000 metric tonnes and plays a significant role in the domestic aluminum output. It is one of the four smelters in the US that employs around 550 workers and makes a contribution of about USD 66 million in the wages and salaries of the workers.
By combining renewable energy with the use of advanced furnace technology, the organisation supports sustainable aluminum manufacturing. The investment would not only support the company's sustainable goals but also enhance employment generation for the employees.
