Simandou's first ore shipment heads for China

A bulk carrier loaded with 200,000 tonnes of high-grade iron ore from the massive Simandou project in Guinea, West Africa, set sail from the Port of Morebaya on December 2 (local time), according to a news release Wednesday from Aluminum Corporation of China (Chinalco), a stakeholder in the Simandou project's northern mining blocks 1 and 2. The vessel is bound for China and marked the maiden commercial shipment of iron ore from the world's largest untapped deposit of high-grade iron ore, the company said.

The ship, named Winning Youth, is a Capesize bulk carrier with a dead weight capacity over 200,000 tonnes. It was designated as the first vessel to carry Simandou iron ore to the international market. Operated by another project stakeholder, Winning International Group, the carrier is expected to arrive at
