Anglo American recently released its first-quarter 2026 report: nickel production stood at 9,100 tonnes in the quarter, down 11.65% quarter-on-quarter and 34.8% year-on-year. This includes 7,500 tonnes of nickel in ferronickel from Barro Alto and 1,600 tonnes from Codemin. (The above figures only reflect the company's nickel operations in Brazil.)
The year-on-year decline was primarily due to maintenance work at both the Barro Alto and Codemin plants. Production is expected to gradually recover from the second quarter. It should be noted that the group's previously held refined nickel business in South Africa has been divested and established as a new company, Valterra Platinum. As a result, refined nickel output from that business is no longer included in Anglo American's nickel production figures starting from the third quarter of 2025.
Additionally, as previously announced, Anglo American has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its nickel business to MMG Singapore Resources Pte. Ltd. The transaction is currently awaiting antitrust approval from the European Commission and is progressing smoothly.
