Vale halts 10 mln t/y Alegria mine on a preventive basis

Vale announced to have suspended the operations of its Alegria mine in the Mariana complex of the Southeastern System on a preventive basis on March 20, and the mine is capable of producing up to 10 million tonnes/year iron ore.

The decision was made even though the mine’s structures have been stable. However, “under stress conditions, the results from preliminary analysis of its structures were inconclusive, not being possible to guarantee their stability under such conditions,” Vale explained. And the mine’s activities will be resumed once the studies can guarantee the stability under the stress
